How to choose bathroom lights: a buying guide

Have you recently moved house and would like to renovate your bathroom? Do you need to change the lighting in your laundry room but don’t know where to start?

We’ve prepared a guide to help you choose the right lighting for your bathroom, putting your safety first.

Here are the steps to follow to light your bathroom

1. Every area of your bathroom needs the appropriate IP protection rating

Lighting for bathrooms requires specific lamps that comply with certain standards of protection against water and humidity. These standards are encapsulated in the IP rating, an acronym for "International Protecting". The IP rating consists of two numbers: the first indicates the degree of protection against solids, the second against water and humidity.

Depending on where you need to position your light source, you will need to choose lamps with different IP ratings: each bathroom zone has its own specific rules, and the image alongside will help you identify them.

  • Zone 1 is the closest to the bath or shower (up to 225 cm above the bottom), where there is a lot of humidity and certainly water. For this area, choose lights with a high protection rating, IP65: take a look at our water-resistant lamps from the EIVA range.
  • Zone 2 is located directly above the shower enclosure, around the sink and around the bathtub up to 60 cm from zone 1. For this area, choose lamps with minimum protection rating IP44, such as the Creative-Cables lighting solutions that can be created with the Lumet System.
  • The rest of the bathroom is not in direct contact with water splashes, but may be exposed to condensation and requires a minimum IP21 rating.

2. Every lamp has its purpose

We carry out countless activities in the bathroom, and as well as choosing lighting that is safe and matches our decor, it’s important to select it according to the function it needs to serve. Let’s take a look together at how to make the most of your bathroom lighting.

Makeup lamps

Adjustable Lamps are perfect for positioning at the sides of a mirror where you shave, apply make-up, or do your manicure.

Thanks to the joint they are equipped with, it is possible to adjust the angle of the light both vertically and horizontally, so you can adapt its use to your needs.

We recommend taking a look at the Fermaluce EIVA for adjustable, water-resistant wall lights.

Mirror lights

Would you like to increase the brightness of your bathroom by installing one or more light points near the mirror? For this purpose, wall lamps with L-shaped extensions are perfect, available both with a lampshade and with an exposed LED light bulb. For greater safety, choose lamps with an IP65 rating.

Bathroom pendant lights

If, on the other hand, what you need is a ceiling light, we recommend creating your own custom water-resistant light by choosing the length of the fabric cable and whether to offset it, so you can best modulate the light in your space.

With EIVA pendant lights you can match the colours of the components to your bathroom and create the bespoke lighting you’ve always wanted.
