Track lighting: the complete guide

pendant spotlight and wall lamps

Track lighting offers a practical and versatile solution in the field of lighting design – a true system that lets you completely change the look and function of a room's lighting without altering the electrical system. The track allows you to add multiple lamps (light fittings) in a row, all from a single existing light point. You can also change your mind and simply move a pendant without having to drill new holes or fill in old ones.

Widely used in the contract sector, such as in restaurants and bars where tables—and therefore the lamps that light them—often need to be moved, track lighting is now becoming increasingly popular in domestic settings as well.

What is track lighting?

When talking about track lighting, we refer to a system comprising a track, usually fixed to the ceiling or wall, onto which various types of lighting fixtures can be installed, removed, and repositioned. It’s a kind of "motorway of light", inside which semi-rigid copper conductors supply power to the lamps. Each lamp is fitted with a specific adaptor that, once inserted, establishes an electrical connection allowing it to function.

Lamps designed for tracks have adaptors instead of ceiling roses or plugs, and these adaptors have two metal tabs that make contact with the copper conductor carrying the neutral (the equivalent of the blue cable) and the copper conductor carrying the live or phase (the equivalent of the brown cable).

Advantages of track lighting

The advantages of this system are numerous:

  • Flexibility: lights can be moved and added without altering the electrical system
  • Versatility: track lighting is suitable for various types of spaces and interior design styles.
  • Customisation: from spotlights to pendant lamps, the range of compatible lighting fixtures is extremely wide
  • Ease of installation and maintenance: it’s very easy to add, remove, or move the lamps

What is the difference between a single-phase and a three-phase track?

The mains voltage, which is the voltage supplied by traditional systems, is 220/230 V, and is carried by cables with two conductors, the neutral and the live (or phase).

Single-phase tracks operate with a single power circuit, meaning they have only two conductors: one for the neutral and one for the (single) phase. All the power is therefore supplied through a single phase and all the lamps on a single-phase track can only be switched on together.

It’s a bit like all the lamps on the track are powered by a single cable with a single plug, so naturally, they can only be switched on and off all at once.

The three-phase system has four copper conductors, one of which carries the neutral and three carry three different phases (that is, three lines). It can therefore support heavy loads, and allows you to manage a large number of lighting devices. It also offers greater flexibility in managing circuits. In fact, three-phase tracks are designed to offer three independent power circuits, and allow up to three separate switches.

This allows you to divide the lights mounted on the same track into three groups, each of which can be switched on individually or together, depending on needs such as the amount of natural light available in the room.

With the three-phase system, it is as if there were three cables with three different plugs, so the user can choose whether to connect or disconnect one, two, or all three. In the adapters, there is a selector that allows you to choose which of the lines to connect to: L1 (line 1), L2 (line 2), and L3 (line 3).

Another advantage of three-phase tracks is the standardisation of the dimensions and positions of the adapters. Unlike single-phase tracks, which are often not standardised, the introduction of three-phase tracks has led manufacturers to develop a more consistent system. This allows drivers from different brands to be used on tracks from different manufacturers, making it possible to use drivers from some brands even on tracks from other brands.

Does a three-phase adapter work on a single-phase track?

No. Single-phase tracks are designed for 2 conductors, while three-phase adapters require a system with 4 conductors.

High and low voltage

Tracks with very low voltage (less than 48 V) are usually smaller and are powered by a transformer that converts the mains voltage (220/230 V) into very low voltage.

Tracks with mains voltage are usually used on ceilings or as pendant fittings and not on walls, because the conductors inside are live with mains voltage and placing them on walls could pose risks, especially if a child tried to stick their hand in.

Compatible lamp types

The beauty of track lighting lies in its versatility. You can choose from a wide range of compatible options, each with its own characteristics. And while classic adjustable LED spotlights allow you to direct the light exactly where you need it, pendant lights add a touch of style to modern design and help create excellent focal points.

When designing a track lighting system, you need to think like a film director. Start by carefully analysing the lighting needs of the space: which areas require more intense lighting? Where is accent lighting needed? Which architectural or decorative features do you want to highlight? This way, it will be easier to choose between the different options, remembering you can always change the configuration if necessary.

Installation and maintenance

Installing a track system requires specific electrical skills. For this reason, DIY is strongly discouraged unless you have the right expertise. The best solution? Rely on a qualified professional who will not only ensure the installation is safe, but also guarantee compliance with current regulations.

Once installed, the system requires minimal maintenance and offers unprecedented flexibility and customisation. With the right design and choice of components, this lighting system can not only meet your current needs, but also evolve over time.
